Things went horribly wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a tsunami with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the sting of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total disaster. We've tried anything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you encounter situations so horrifically bad that you can't help but smile. It's like your brain tries to understand the sheer magnitude of destruction and just throws its hands up, opting for amusement as a coping strategy.
But then, you remember that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain bad. And the laughter you felt morphs into a groan.
In the end, you are left with a sense of bewilderment. You question about the nature of it all. Was this some kind of twisted art experiment?
Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?

Worst Day Ever
It all started with the case of uncontrollable hair. I couldn't figure it to look right. As I was running out the door, I fell and landed all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was totally behind schedule for work.
I flustered. My {boss|mentor|was absolutely furious. I managed to explain, but it was a complete disaster.
The rest of the day was an absolute nightmare. seemed to conspire against me. I stay awake.
By the time I reached my destination, I was completely drained. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as a day to forget.

It all started out badly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me read more feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
